Today’s card features stamps from one of my favorite sets in the Occasions Catalog – From the Herd – which features a fabulous bunch of fun animals on a large stamp along with lots of sentiments and accessory stamps – perfect for making cards for kids & adults alike!!!
I wanted to make a card for an 8 year old girl and so decided to make it interactive & fun – firstly there are flaps to open mimicking barn doors and secondly, on the inside I stamped the animals and left them uncolored – packaged up with this card is a set of coloring pencils so that she can color the animals in herself…which of course you could switch out for a crayons for a younger recipient…
And here it is…the front of the card…
And the inside of the card…
And the pack of pencils to go along with it…
What do you think? I love love love it!!! It just makes me smile every time I look at it!
AND rather than describe every little bit of detail about how I made it & measurements which would clutter up this blog post, I put together a free printable tutorial to make it easy for you to make your own version – click HERE to find it (it will open in a new browser window)
The card base…I stamped my animals using a stamp from From the Herd (pg 15 Occasions Catalog) onto a piece of White card stock and then mounted this onto a piece of Black cardstock.
The barn doors…fun & easy to make using the background wood grain effect stamp called Hardwood (pg 175) – I cut two pieces of Crumb Cake card stock and stamped Hardwood onto both sides of them using Soft Suede ink – when done, I adhered them to the back of the piece of black cardstock and the basic card was done…now for the fun bit…adding some bling!!!
The front…I wanted the effect of barn doors and decided they needed some hinges and I found the PERFECT things to use in the Project Life Playground Accessory Pack (pg 189) – in that pack are some textured corrugated shapes which I trimmed to size, added some Neutrals Candy Dots (pg 208) and popped them onto my card – LOVE that textured look – it fits in perfectly…
The animals…I stamped more and cut a couple out using my super sharp Paper Snips (pg 215) and added them using Dimensionals – under the pig you can see another bit of textured strip – just LOVE that look…
The speech bubble…I decided to add a speech bubble to my goat and cut it out using a die from Word Bubbles Framelits (pg 230) – and stamped word onto it using another stamp in From the Herd. I then added a small red 3/4″ Circle and that heart is another embellishment in the PL Playground Accessory Pack…
The door handles…are simply small black buttons from Neutrals Designer Buttons (pg 208) – I used glue dots to attach each to a black 1/2″ Circle and positioned them on my card – around one of them I tied a piece of Linen Thread (pg 206) and then cut it at 7″ so that there is plenty to twist & turn around the buttons to close the card.
The finishing touches…I added some Rhinestone Jewels in a few places…after all, a card needs some sparkly bling, eh?!
The inside of the card…I wanted some character going on in there too and so decided to add some more embellishments that I found in the PL Playground Accessory Pack – those corrugated circles with cut out hearts are just perfect in there – I added a piece of Real Red cardstock beneath each cut out and love how they look – check out that rustic texture…
The sentiment stamps…are also in From the Herd – I stamped Happy Birthday onto a scrap strip of card stock and used my What’s Up Punch (pg 222) to shape each end into a perfect V – then I added it using Dimensionals and popped a black Candy Dot to each end.
The pencil pack…I decided that the box the pencils came in was just too boring LOL so decided to take them out and make a belly band to hold them together – full details & measurements to make this are also featured in my tutorial.
I stamped Hardwood several times onto a piece of Crumb Cake and shaped that top edge using the Designer Rosette Bigz XL Die (pg 233) to give a picket fence look…
I wrapped around a piece of Burlap Ribbon that I cut down & frayed, then Linen Thread and finally added a little tag to match in with my card…
Here it is all together…

Well, I made quite the mess today LOL – check out my messy desk…this is after just making this one project and the rest of then other three surface look the same as this one…I think I have some cleaning up in my future…my hubby just walked in, mouth open…I told him this is just the result of the creative process (chuckle)…
What makes me giggle is I lose EVERYTHING by the time it gets to this state…I spend literally minutes hunting for my tape or dimensionals…and have NO ROOM left to work in…if only I’d be tidier along the way…
ok, now this is such a cute & fun card…. Dang it, I’ve been fighting not to get this set. Now it’s all your fault I’m buying it… lol. Thanks for sharing your creativity
This is SO STINKIN’ CUTE I can hardly stand it! Oh my goodness, if I had more time, this would be one of my projects for this weekends’ workshop.
So clever! Thank you for sharing your creativity and the information to go with it!
Wow! My daughter is getting married next year, on her farm. I’ve been searching for an idea for her invitations that incorporates a barn and some farm animals. I love this and I hope she does too! Thanks for sharing.
