I absolutely love using the colors red, black and vanilla together – they are just so stylish and come together so easily and give a rich warm look…
And today I decided to make a card that uses them and incorporate some of my favorite patterned papers from Modern Medley DSP along with a few cute embellishes to give it a little vintage feel…
And so here is my card…
It just has such a warm look about it which it hard to get when you use black! I think that the red combined with the feminine lacey bits and hearts take the the coldness of black away…
The card base…is Basic Black onto which I layered a piece of Cherry Cobbler…I then added a piece of Very Vanilla which I distressed on the edges using my Paper Snips – to do this you simply (and very CAREFULLY!!!) pull the V of your scissors along your cardstock edge to create a nice ruffed up look.
The patterned banner shapes…are made using dies from Hearts-a-Flutter Framelits (pg 187) Circle Card Thinlits and Bitty Banners Framelits (pg 187) – trust me – you can’t have too many of these banner dies!!! – and various papers – those patterned papers are all from Modern Medley DSP (pg 154) – aren’t they GORGEOUS?!
The solid color banner shapes…I wanted my solid colored banner pieces to have some texture and so the thin red one is cut from a piece of Cherry Cobbler Core-dinations (pg 149) for that fabulous cross-hatch look – and the wide black one on the end is simply Basic Black cardstock that I textured using the Chevron Textured Embossing Folder (pg 191)…click on the photo below for a closer look…
I layered them onto my card base using a mix of tape and Dimensionals for a staggered effect.
The sentiment…I wanted a sentiment that would suit my vintage-y shabby card perfectly and found it in the set Chalk Talk (pg 12) – I stamped it using Black Ink onto Vanilla cardstock and used the perfectly co-ordinating Extra Large Oval Punch (pg 182) to punch it out.
The button…is from Very Vintage Designer Buttons (pg 169) and I threaded through a piece of twine and tied a bow – I tried White Bakers Twine but it was too white…hmmm…I wanted more of a vanilla look to keep with the theme of my card…
But we don’t carry vanilla Bakers Twine…BUT after some looking, I found just what I wanted when I took off the silver thread bit of Silver Bakers Twine (pg 24 Occasions Catalog)!!! I found out that that twine is thicker and has a vanilla hue to it – YAY – and it worked perfectly!!!
The hearts…after adding that sentiment I just had to add some hearts to my card – I made the small black heart using the Small Heart Punch (pg 183) and a scrap of Black cardstock which I then textured using the Square Lattice Embossing Folder (pg 191)…
The larger red heart was cut out using a die from Hearts-a-Flutter Framelits (pg 187) and a piece of polka dotted patterned paper from Regals Collection DSP Paper Stack (pg 152) – I wanted to give that heart a bit of vintage loving, and so I textured it using the Square Lattice Embossing Folder and just LOVE how it turned out! Check out that shabby chic look for yourself…
The finishing touch…in keeping with my vintage style theme, I added piece of folded Victoria Crochet Trim (pg 173) under the red heart, added a pewter pin from Vintage Trinkets (pg pg 170) and tied on a little piece of that same twine – and I found that those little things finished my card off perfectly!
